Photosynthesis Rate

Plot net photosynthesis against light intensity. Identify the compensation point, light saturation, and the effect of CO₂ as a limiting factor.

Parameters

Key Concepts

  • • Compensation point: light intensity at which photosynthesis = respiration (Pnet = 0)
  • • Light saturation point: beyond this, light is not limiting — CO₂ or Rubisco become limiting
  • • Dark respiration (Rd): y-intercept below zero — CO₂ released even in darkness
  • • Increasing CO₂ concentration raises Pmax — particularly visible at high light intensity
  • • CAM/C₄ plants have higher Pmax and lower compensation points than C₃ plants in hot, dry conditions
